How to open webp format image files in Photoshop

What is webp?

WebP(pronounced: weppy) is an image file format that provides both lossy and lossless compression (reversible compression).

WebP was initially released in September 2010, and its support library reached version 1.0 in April 2018. As of May 2021, 94% of browsers support this format.

The design goal of WebP is to reduce the file size while achievingJPEG, PNG, and GIF formats, and hopes to reduce the time it takes to send image files over the network.GoogleIn earlier tests, WebP's lossless compression reduced file size by 45% compared to PNG files found on the web. Even after those PNG files were processed using pngcrush and PNGOUT, WebP was able to reduce file size by 28%.

The maximum number of pixels supported by WebP is 16383x16383. Lossy WebP only supports 8-bit YUV 4:2:0 format. Lossless (reversible) WebP supports VP8L encoding and 8-bit RGBA color space. Both lossy and lossless compression support Alpha transparency channel, ICC color profile, and XMP annotation data.

WebP has two modes: static and dynamic. Animated WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, ICC color profile, XMP metadata, and alpha transparent channel.

Photoshop cannot open webp

Simply drag the WebP format into your Photoshop to open it for editing. After editing, go to File -> Save As -> Select WebP format!
