Since open source, it has been developed by David Xanatos, and before that by Sophos (Sophos acquired it from Invincea, which earlier acquired it from the original author Ronen Tzur). It creates an isolated operating environment similar to a sandbox, in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying local or mapped drives. The isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing.

Since Open Sourcing Sandboxie is released in two forms, one is based onMFCThe classic version of the sandboxie.ini branch contains the new features and a new Q'-based UI, and the plus version contains the new features and a new Q'-based UI. All newly added features are targeted to the plus branch, but can usually be used in the classic version by manually editing the sandboxie.ini file.

Sandboxie comes in two flavors, Plus and Classic. They share the same core components, which means they have the same level of security and compatibility. The difference lies in the availability of features in the user interface.

The Plus build has a modern Qt-based UI that supports all the new features added since the project was open sourced:

The Classic build has an old MFC-based UI that is no longer developed, so it lacks native interface support for Plus features. However, most of them can be configured manually in the Sandboxie.ini configuration file, and some valuable contributions can still be applied today.
