What is HEVC?
High Efficiency Video CodingHEVC), also known as H.265 and MPEG-H Part 2, is a video compression standard that is considered the successor to the ITU-T H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standard.ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) began to develop as ISO/IEC 23008-2 MPEG-H Part 2 or ITU-T H.265. The first version of the HEVC/H.265 video compression standard was accepted as an official standard of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) on April 13, 2013. HEVC is believed to not only improve image quality, but also achieve twice the compression rate of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (equivalent to a bit rate reduction of 50% at the same picture quality), and can support 4K resolution and even ultra-high definitiontelevision(UHDTV), the highest resolution can reach 8192×4320 (8K resolution).
Several coding standards based on HEVC extensions are underway, including range extensions (supporting advanced video formats), scalable coding, and 3D video coding standards.
What is High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)?
Until recently, H.264 (also known as AVC) was the codec of choice for optimizing quality and reducing file size. Upgrading to H.265 (or HEVC) requires more computing power than H.264, but is much more efficient and provides better video quality at lower bitrates.

When did the HEVC codec become standard?
Like the H.264 standard, HEVC is a joint effort between the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), who established the first version of the HEVC codec standard in 2013.
ITU-T promotes the development and adoption of telecommunications standards, while ISO/IEC manages standards for the electronics industry.
The purpose of the HEVC codec is to facilitate video compression, and its advantages can be summarized into the following four points:
- Compared with H.264, the bit rate of fixed video quality is reduced by 50% on average
- Deliver higher quality video at the same bit rate
- Defines standard syntax to simplify implementation and maximize interoperability
- Keep it network friendly, i.e. packaged in MPEG transport stream
