What should I do if my AirPods fall into water?
When you accidentally AirPods When you fall into the water, you may have a heartbeataccelerateToday, Apple AirPods make our lives easier. They allow us to listen to music while exercising or make calls while driving. But unfortunately, when you put AirPods dropped into waterTherefore, water can permanently damage your AirPods.
Okay, we’re kidding. You can fix some damage. Our team did extensive research and put AirPods in different water levels to see what to do when you accidentally drop your AirPods in water. We found a number of solutions that we’re about to unveil. So, let’s get moving.
Are AirPods waterproof?
None of the AirPods models are waterproof or sweat-resistant. On the other hand, some newer models are waterproof and sweat-resistant. Therefore, you should not shower or swim with them. Also, avoid using AirPods in saunas, steam rooms, or while skiing. Also, do not use them inFaucetWashing in a washing machine or other water-related activities.
Apple has launched five AirPods models. Unfortunately, the first, second, and Max AirPods are neither water-resistant nor sweat-resistant. On the other hand, AirPods Pro and AirPods 3rd generation are water-resistant and sweat-resistant. Based on this trend, we can probably expect future models to have the same or higher water- and sweat-resistant performance.
The 1st and 2nd generation AirPods and AirPods Max do not have an official IP rating. The AirPods Pro and AirPods 3rd generation have an IP rating of IPX4.
Is the AirPods charging case waterproof?
AirPods charging boxes are divided into three types: regular charging box, wireless charging box and MagSafe charging box.
Both the first and second generation AirPods come with the usual charging case. However, you can buy a wireless charging case for them. AirPods Pro used to come with a wireless charging case, but now come with a MagSafe charging case (which is not waterproof). The third version of AirPods also includes a MagSafe charging case. However, it is waterproof.
In short, the AirPods 3rd generation MagSafe charging case is the only charging case that is water and sweat resistant. The rest, including the AirPods Pro Wireless and MagSafe charging case, are not water resistant. On the other hand, the open design case of the AirPods Max obviously lacks such protection.
Are AirPods Pro and 3rd generation waterproof?
While AirPods Pro and 3rd generation are water- and sweat-resistant, this is not permanent. The water resistance of AirPods may decrease over time as the seal degrades from constant use, wear, drops, etc. Additionally, chemicals in soaps, cleansers, lotions, perfumes, sunscreens, oils, hair dyes, and other cosmetics can damage the water seal and membrane.
There are no established parameters for determining if the seal is compromised. Therefore, take extra precautions when using previous AirPods.
6 things to do when you put your AirPods in water
That heartbreaking moment when you drop your AirPods in water doesn’t have to end in disaster or result in another expensive charge on your card. Let’s take a look at some solutions to protect your AirPods from water damage.
Solution 1. Gently wipe your AirPods
You dropped your AirPods in water and they're now soaking wet. Simply dry them off with a microfiber towel and place them upside down to dry before trying to connect or use them.
The same procedure should be followed for the charging case. If your AirPods appear dry after a few minutes of drying, continue to use them. However, if they still don't work, don't give up. Some more complex methods may be able to bring those soggy AirPods back to life.
Do not put your AirPods back into the charging case after you've placed them in water. The closed compartment will prevent your AirPods from drying out properly, and any water leaks will damage your AirPods case.
Solution 2. Use a desiccantbag
If your AirPods still seem to be retaining moisture, prepare a container and some desiccant sachets. These little paper packets that say "DO NOT EAT!" are often found in the packaging of shoes, electronics, and other products.
The beads in these packages absorb moisture. Fill the container with several of the pouches and the damp AirPods, then seal it for a few hours. This should remove any remaining moisture from the AirPods, restoring them to dryness and functionality.
When your AirPods are dry, try connecting them to your iPhone. Remember to listen to them first. Even if they are connected, the audio quality may be permanently degraded.
You might be tempted to try the traditional dry rice trick to dry out a wet phone (in case you didn't know, soaking your phone in a container of raw rice will absorb all the moisture in a few hours). We don't recommend doing this with AirPods. Rice grains and particles can get caught in your AirPods, which can do more harm than good. If this method doesn't work, move on to the next solution.
Solution 3. Use a cotton swab
Take a cotton swab that you normally use to clean your ears. Rub it with your fingers to remove any fine cotton threads that may have broken off and are clogging the inside. Then, use the cotton swab to carefully wipe away any liquid that may have found its way into the charging case.
NOTE: The end of the charging case has a connector for charging the AirPods. When cleaning with a cotton swab, make sure not to push down too hard or dislodge it.
Solution 4. Charging case facing downwards
Apple recommends opening the AirPods case and setting it down. Then, make sure to leave the charging case open and leave it unattended for a few hours.
Solution 5. Remove water from the speaker
Playing noise at a certain frequency can cause liquid to leak through the speaker mesh. First, place the AirPods withiPhone or iPadPair. Then, use the Water Eject shortcut to remove water from your AirPods. This procedure is similar to Apple's Water Eject feature, available on newer Apple Watches.
Here's how to use Water Eject if you accidentally drop your AirPods in water:
1) On your iPhone, tap the iCloud link to download the Water Eject shortcut.
exist iOS 15 and later. Before you tap the iCloud link, make sure you allow untrusted shortcuts if you're using iOS 14 or earlier.
2) On the My Shortcuts page, tap the Spray option.
3) A notification should appear. To start the process, tap Start Spraying.

Alternatively, if you don't want to install an untrusted shortcut on your iPhone, you can get rid of the water. You can use a free third-party app or visit a website that just plays the sound of spraying water.
Other apps can do this, but we chose Sonic because it App Store It’s free and performs great. Once you install the program, you can experiment with the sound frequencies to see which works best. Finally, press the play button to eliminate water from your iPhone speakers.
To remove water from your speakers, you can also use a website called Online Tone Generator.
Solution 6. Place your AirPods under a fan
In addition to the methods listed above, you may also consider placing your AirPods near a fan or in a warm place to speed up the evaporation of moisture.
Additional tips for preventing future AirPods water damage incidents
Follow these guidelines to protect your AirPods from getting wet and ensure they last a long time:
- Check your jeans, pants, and shirt pockets before washing them.
- Never put wet or sweaty AirPods into their case without wiping them clean first.
- It’s fine to place your waterproof iPhone near a water bottle or juice glass on your desk. But always take extra precautions and don’t place your MacBook or AirPods near water. We hope you’ll follow suit.
- Wearing AirPods in the rain is not a good idea.
- Invest in a waterproof AirPods case. However, this will only protect your charging case when it is closed. AirPods are still susceptible to water ingress when removed from the case.
