Reddit was founded in 2005 by Steve Hoffman and Alexis Ohanian, who were roommates at the University of Virginia. Condé Nast acquired the site in 2006. Reddit spun out of Condé Nast in September 2011 and became a subsidiary of Condé Nast's parent company, Advance Publications. Although Advance Publications is its largest shareholder, Reddit operates independently. Reddit is headquartered in San Francisco, California. In October 2014, Reddit received $50 million in a round of investment led by Sam Altman and including Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel, Ron Conway, Snoop Dogg, and Sheila Leto. Their investment valued Reddit at $500 million.

In August 2018, netizens discovered that Reddit was unavailable in mainland China. It was later confirmed that Reddit was affected by DNS pollution and was unavailable in some areas.

Reddit is currently the fifth largest website in the United States, with traffic second only to Google, YouTube, Facebook and Amazon, and 330 million monthly active users.
